BRITPOP – David Bowie Night

by Johnny Darko on March 7, 2010

Three words: WE. ARE. BACK.

SATURDAY 27th MARCH sees us re-launching BRITPOP at the first of two venues for 2010. First up, THE GLADSTONE HOTEL*: It has all late-night lunacy of The Abercrombie Hotel mixed with the chilled, beer-supping vibe of The Clare Hotel. It has a cute and intimate courtyard for all you outdoor types and chimneys. $10 jugs (until 10pm) and the legendary “fishbowls” are the drinks of choice.

Kicking things off, JOHNNY DARKO will be slamming out 3 hours of David Bowie throughout the night for your partying/listening pleasure. He’ll be joined by DJs TOM LIBERTINE and ANDREW P STREET (both heavy on the 90s), MEDUSA and the best indie DJ in town EL MARIACHI. You’ll hear so much British awesomeness, you’ll want to emigrate.

And it’s STILL only $10.  Wam, bam, thank you ma’am.

Doors 7pm. FREE ENTRY before 8pm (for all you students and scotsmen).

REGULAR PLAYLIST: The Libertines, The Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis, Blur, David Bowie, The Cure, The Smiths, Kasabian, The Stone Roses, The Fratellis, The Arctic Monkeys, The Jam, Babyshambles, Supergrass, The Happy Mondays, The Buzzcocks, The Klaxons, The Cribs, The Rolling Stones, New Order, The Beatles, Joy Division, Gang Of Four, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, The Wombats, Pulp, Wire, Belle & Sebastian, British Sea Power, Prodigy…

NEW RELEASE PLAYLIST: The Big Pink, The Cribs, Two Door Cinema Club, Delphic, Florence & The Machine, Kasabian, Bombay Bicycle Club, Foals, The Courteeners etc.

* “Where the bleeding-’ell is The Gladstone Hotel?” Well, my learned friend, it’s a mere 2 mins walk from Central Station (along Regent St).

WATCH/DOWNLOAD: Foals – Spanish Sahara

by Johnny Darko on March 3, 2010

In prepping us for their second album, “Total Life” (due to hit on 10th May 2010), it appears Foals have taken an enormous leaf out of The Horrors’ promotional handbook.  Much like The Horrors’ “Sea Within A Sea“-six-minute-not-a-single-single, Foals tease us with four minutes of chillwave before they hit familiar territory on viral video single “Spanish Sahara“.  So far, so good.  But it’s not exactly a dramatic sonic reinvention.

For the price of an email address, an “official” remix of the same is also available for download from the Foals website.  So how about an Australia tour then, chaps?

LISTEN: Peter Gabriel – Scratch My Back

by Johnny Darko on February 17, 2010

Pitchfork might have come down a little too heavy on poor old Peter Gabriel.  The man’s legendary status doesn’t necessarily give him a free pass on every art-wank project he undertakes, but there is a quiet beauty to his new covers album “Scratch My Back”.  It’s the kind of record that would soothe you on your journey from drunken dawn to afternoon-hangover.  Check out (and download) the moody piano work on his cover of Bon Iver’s “Flume” [via Stereogum].

If that ain’t enough, read the jaw-droppingly good tracklist:

Tracklist:
01 “Heroes” (David Bowie)
02 “The Boy in the Bubble” (Paul Simon)
03 “Mirrorball” (Elbow)
04 “Flume” (Bon Iver)
05 “Listening Wind” (Talking Heads)
06 “The Power of the Heart” (Lou Reed)
07 “My Body Is a Cage” (Arcade Fire)
08 “The Book of Love” (The Magnetic Fields)
09 “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today” (Randy Newman)
10 “Après moi” (Regina Spektor)
11 “Philadelphia” (Neil Young)
12 “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” (Radiohead)
