WATCH: The Beatles at Melbourne’s Festival Hall, June 1964

didgeridooDJ Mucky Fingers uncovers an excellent historical artifact from The Beatles’ one and only tour of Australia in June, 1964.

“This concert was filmed by Channel Nine at Melbourne’s Festival Hall on June 17, 1964. It is the band’s sixth and final show at the venue, having played two shows a day there for three days.

All up, the Fab Four played 20 shows in Australia. The first four shows – at Adelaide’s Centennial Hall – marked the final appearances by fill-in drummer, Jimmy Nicol. Nicol was deputising for Ringo (who was having his tonsils removed). He returned in time to play shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

This footage is particularly good because you can actually hear the music over the screaming; an occurrence not common at most Beatle concerts and the main reason they stopped touring altogether.

It’s a hit-packed set that also includes several cuts from their soon-to-be-released film, A Hard Day’s Night.”
